Don’t Read Ayn Rand for an Antidote! (2008-04-17)
The author has the ability to communicate an essential aspect of contemplative experience to contemporary people. You don’t need a technical vocabulary, the aura of a distant historical period, an outfit from an exotic culture, or a preface by a Harvard scholar. It’s simple. But it’s real. If you want to stay imprisoned in a nightmare, read Ayn Rand. If you think mysticism is about stupidity and nihilism, read Meister Eckhart, Plotinus, Richard of St. Victor, Hafiz, St. Teresa of Avila,the Baal Shem Tov, Jalal el-din Rumi, St. Bonaventure. But if you just need to know the way out of the enchanted enclosure of the ego once in awhile, try this author. Dare to feel thankful.Why????????????? (2008-04-16)
Why do we think a book will help us through life? Its a good book though. I loved the book Mr Instability though it had me laughing so loud I thought I was going to tear something! and it was helpful in its hiddin meanings.Finally, a self help book! (2008-04-16)
How original. A new age, motivational help book. How many different ways can this package be wrapped up? If these books REALLY worked, why do they keep getting recycled? One word: permanancy. I bet the vast majority of people who read this book and “buy into” the “story” have done so before and will do again……just with different books. Break the addiction!! This book is just another quick fix….that wont last.Why only a quick fix? These books never provide tangible strategies for the reader to use to facilitate CHANGE (hence permanancy) so that they don’t need to cling on to the next best thing when is pumped out by a publishing conglomerate. Want a book that gives you step by step, concrete instructions for changing your life? What to Say When you Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter. I enjoyed this book so much that I am reading it again for the second time. Everything in this book resonated with me so much that it seems like I am regaining consciousness. It is simply an amazing book. I will be getting more of Eckhart Tolle’s books in the near future.Zzzzzz…. (2008-04-16)
Nothing sells a book quite like informing the reader:

Heck, now I am all worried I may not be ready…and maybe everyone else is…and maybe I’ll get left out! Oh no!
Oh well, nothing new here…repackaged Eastern thought for Western seekers. Reading a book about Buddhism will give you the same outline about “ego” without the drone of Eckhart Tolle going on for pages and pages, restating the same thing over and over and over again. In all fairness, I have not finished this book because it is more painful than stabbing myself in the eye with a pencil. But I can see how others, who may be just getting into reading about different types of spiritual thought may get hooked into it if they have not already read other spiritual or comparative religion books. And besides if Oprah says it’s good, sheesh, it must be…in a sort of mass consumer way.
