An Effective Starting Point (2008-04-14)
The strength of this book is really centered in the online test that you get with your purchase of the book. Since, I found the online test to be so useful, I salute this book.

Other reviewers have already made the point, repeatedly, that Marcus Buckingham’s book is the better read on the benefit of using one’s strengths (I agree). But, the combination of this book, assuming you make use of the online test, and Buckingham’s is a powerful one-two punch to drive home the point that leveraging our strengths is important to our success.

Because our society tends to emphasize our weaknesses (including with relentless advertising offering instant cures to our weaknesses), there is much more written about curing our weaknesses. It is great to see some authors serving up an alternative thought: leverage your strengths. Of course to do so, one first needs to objectively assess one’s strengths and this book, and the accompanying online test, is an effective way to do so.

computer a must have (2008-04-12)
Finding Strengths was a great book and very helpful. The only negative I can give it is that you must have computer access. I bought it for someone without access to a computer and he was unable to take the test at the end which was the whole point of the book. I ordered this for an activity at work and thought it would be a waste of time. I actually discovered that it was anything but that - and I learned a lot about myself and my hidden strengths. This is a great activity to do with your team or even just to do for yourself to point yourself or your career in the right direction. I really enjoyed taking the quiz and reading about my strengths in the book & the result PDFs at the website.More of a Service than a Book (2008-04-11)
I had been introduced to StrengthsFinder at a conference, and I decided to try it out since it was inexpensive.

What you’re really paying for when buying this is a service that lets you take a test online. The information is simple to find, and in fact, the report repeats what is in the book for your top 5 themes. It is annoying that one has to buy a book instead of being able to directly pay online to take the test, but that does not detract from the quality of this service.

From my experience with the test, there were some suprises, and some things that just seemed obvious. While themes such as Analytical were expected, others such as Relator were more suprising, but never did the results of this sound completely out of line with my character/skills. If anything, it was interesting to think about how my choices and preferences came together into the themes.

I’d recommend this for anybody who has a general interest in determining what strengths that they can capitalize on AND is willing to devote about 30 minutes to taking a simple (although long) assessment. I would imagine that the report provided in StrengthsFinder is also useful for employers who have a vested interest in placing their employees in occupations which are best suited for them.

To summarize the perspective: Use and develop your strengths; don’t waste time on the weaknesses - Too much time developing weaknesses is detrimental. You can only develop your weaknesses so far, and too much effort developing weaknesses weakens your strengths.Need “internet code” to use book. (2008-04-06)
