A Truly Unique Publication!! (2007-11-23)
This is a truly unique publication. I’ve been reading ADQ for about 2 years now and never miss an issue. There is simply nothing else out there like this (unless you take into account Stampington & Company’s other non-doll related publications, which also often feature doll “crafts”). Yes, there are plenty of other artisan doll-crafter magazines out there, but this magazine focuses primarily on those dolls which are made in very unconventional ways–often by mixed media assemblages, felt, beads, constructed from found objects, etc. While some dolls featured may be more realistic in representing the human form, you will see many more that are mixed media, fantasy themed, and/or not humanistic at all (animals, fruits, gourds, etc). I have always had an interest in dolls, and I’ve been an artist for years (painting and drawing), but the melding of these two worlds has been a most exciting and mind-opening experience for me. I highly recommend ADQ for those who love to create.
Oh, and as others have stated, the quality of this publication is very high!! Thick pages, quality color photographs, little advertisement–almost like a soft-cover book, makes each issue a keepsake.Art Doll Quarterly (2007-05-12)
I have not received this magazine yet. I cannot rate it until I receive it.Worth the price (2006-06-26)
This is a great magazine for any artist. Each issue is filled with inspiration. The price seems high but it is worth the cost. One, the magazine is printed on heavier paper than a regular magazine. It is more like a soft cover book. Second, there are extremely few ad’s, and none of them are in the middle of an article. This is a “magazine” that you would keep on your bookshelf.Lovely worthwhile current artisan info (2006-02-17)
First of all, it’s cheaper to subscribe to this magazine directly from Stampington’s website, unless you have an amazon g.c. or other “free money” to use up. www.stampington.com That said, this is a lovely, heavy, quality quarterly, and well worth the hefty price tag. Because it’s a quarterly, you get the additional time necessary to review the extensive coverage (including many clear photos) of the work by many current artists and artisans. There is a wide range of styles, of course, since this is an art magazine more than a market-driven-toy magazine, and so be prepared to dislike some things. That is a hallmark of art, it’s stronger and more personal, so your reactions may be likewise.
I picked up my latest copy on the newsstand because I knew of one of the artists featured, and was so impressed that I am going to subscribe. I like it better than Stampington’s Belle Armoire, and I hope ADQ keeps up their apparent habit of providing lots and lots of variety and detail.
